Carolyn Thornton

Carolyn Thornton passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 18, 2022. She was born in Ogden, Utah in 1936 to Ernest and Mildred Taylor Schneiter. Carolyn graduated from Weber High School in 1955. While attending Weber State College, she met Neil Raymond Thornton at a football game. After Neil returned from Army service in Europe in 1958, the two married in 1959. They were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple.

While Neil worked as the Assistant Golf Professional at her family’s business, Schneiter’s Riverside Golf Course, Carolyn raised their three children, Tammy, Brad and Michelle. She dedicated her life to her children, providing them a loving, nurturing home. Carolyn logged countless miles driving Brad and Michelle to the golf course. She passed her sewing, culinary and baking skills down to Tammy.

Carolyn held numerous church positions and had been a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed shopping outings and going to lunch with her besties. She played golf and was a member of Riverside Ladies Golf Association for many years.

When Neil retired, Carolyn filled their time with travel. She kept photo albums documenting their trips to Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, multiple cruises and two trips throughout Europe.

Carolyn could not have had a sweeter and more supportive husband. Neil treated her like a rare and precious gem. He constantly praised her cooking and encouraged her to open a restaurant so that others could enjoy his Carolyn-made favorites. Neil told Carolyn she was beautiful, sometimes dozens of times a day.

Family was everything to Carolyn. Family gatherings for birthdays and holidays were a big priority. Her love, care and concern for family grew exponentially as her children had their own children and eventually great-grandchildren. Carolyn’s face lit up with a glowing smile every time she saw one of her grandchildren and she cherished every hug and kiss.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Tammy (Jim) Hanchett, Brad (Julie) Thornton and Michelle (Beth) Thornton; and by her grandchildren, Joshua, Brianne, Cierra, Braden, Caleb, Hayley, Jillian, Andrew, Beau and Nic; as well as seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear brother, Ernie Schneiter, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; parents and two siblings, Gene Schneiter and Colleen Randall.

The family wishes to thank Applegate Hospice, especially Jan, Yesse and Debbie who helped Tammy with the care of our Mom for the past three months.
