Carl Eugene Hymas, of Layton Utah, peacefully retired from this life March 12, 2026.
Gene was born to Jesse and LaMona Hymas July 27, 1937, in Heyburn, Idaho. He had a happy childhood playing in the Snake River, getting good grades, playing sports, helping on the family hobby farm, and riding motorcycles with his Dad. He was also a good brother to his three sisters.
His college education began in Moscow, Idaho, where he also participated in the ROTC. That laid the foundation for a distinguished career in the Air Force, and he always took the opportunities to further his education. He retired as a Lt. Colonel with a PhD and was recruited by companies like TRW and Northrup Grumman to lead teams of engineers. He was always dedicated to his work and anyone working on his team was lucky to be mentored and loved by him. He was regularly teased that he didn’t know how to retire because it took him many tries to get it right!
Gene was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various callings including bishop, stake presidency, and mission president. His favorite calling was that of being a home teacher, and he truly loved and cared for everyone he served. His life is a reflection of his testimony, as he lived so humbly and full of love.
More than anything, Gene was completely devoted to his sweet wife, Dianna. They were married June 30, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were a perfect match and after 65 years together they were still happily in love together raising five daughters. Gene rarely used the word “daughter” without preceding it with the word “wonderful.” Even in his last days, when it was a challenge for him to communicate, he would whisper, “five awesome daughters” and would light up when his sweetheart gave him a kiss. He was the best husband and father any girl could ask for.
Gene was so devoted to his family he rarely took time to develop his own personal hobbies, but there were two things that made him extremely happy: BYU football (Go Cougs!) and ice cream. It was impossible for anyone to visit the Hymas home without being encouraged to visit the ice cream freezer. He also taught us that ice cream just fills in the cracks and to never eat ice cream alone, so usually the trip to the ice cream freezer included bringing him some ice cream as well. He will be happy to see that his football and ice cream traditions will be carried on by the family!
Gene’s legacy includes his five daughters—Lona, Michelle, Rhonda, Tonya, and Annette—their spouses, 22 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
