Carl Edwin Bates, 77, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2025.
Carl was born on August 5, 1948, to Leland and Barbara Bates and grew up in Ogden, Utah, as the middle of three children. His love of sports started young and carried throughout his entire life. Carl played many sports growing up, including baseball for Ogden High School, where he graduated in 1966. Soon after graduation, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia from 1967 to 1969, an experience that deeply shaped his life. Carl stayed close to the Lord and served faithfully in countless callings, including Young Men, Sunday School president, records clerk, sports director, and teacher. Following his mission, Carl pursued his education at Brigham Young University and Weber State University.
On November 16, 1973, Carl was sealed to his eternal companion, Penny Allen, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Their marriage of 51 years was filled with love, faith, and devotion to one another and to their family. Together they built a life in Clinton, Utah, where they raised five children. As the years passed, their family grew to include 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each of whom brought Carl immense joy. He rarely missed a game, recital, or school event, and his children and grandchildren could always count on his enthusiastic support from the stands.
Carl leaves a legacy of service to his community and his country. In 1972, he joined the United States Air Force Reserves, where he dedicated 26 years of service and retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in 1998. Carl also built a long and fulfilling career with the Davis School District, working as a carpenter for 32 years. He retired from the district in June of 2010, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, skill, and dedication.
As his family grew, Carl shifted from player to fan, but his passion for sports never waned. He never missed an opportunity to watch or attend sporting events, especially with family. As a season ticket holder for both the Utah Jazz and Weber State for many years, he passed his love of sports on to his children. Carl’s greatest joy came from supporting his children and grandchildren in their activities. His boisterous and unwavering encouragement will be greatly missed at stadiums, sidelines, gymnasiums, and dugouts throughout Utah.
Carl leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and who will carry his example of service, faith, and devotion forward. He is survived by his wife, Penny Allen Bates; daughter Tami (Brian) Bates Cruz, daughter Holly Bates, daughter Heather (Robby) Bates Haltinner, son Mark (Jody) Bates, mother-in-law Cleoma Allen, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Barbara Nielsen Bates, son Jeffrey Bates, brother Leland Bates, sister Debra Bates Boatright, and father-in-law Kenith Allen.
