Brent Barney

November 24, 1950 — November 3, 2023

On November 3, 2023, at the age of 72, Brent Barney peacefully concluded his journey, succumbing to the challenges posed by Lewy Body Dementia. Born on November 24, 1950, to Freeland and Dorothy Barney, Brent's legacy is marked by a life of dedication and love.

In 1984, Brent earned his Master's in CPA from the University of Utah, setting the stage for a remarkable career. His impactful leadership roles at the Utah State Tax Commission and as Chief Petty Officer (CPO) in the Navy Reserves reflect his unwavering commitment and diligent work ethic.

Brent's devotion extended beyond his professional achievements; he was a caring father, grandfather, and husband, mirroring the same dedication to his family that defined all aspects of his life.

Driven by a vision of early retirement and a zest for life, Brent tirelessly pursued his dreams. His passion for running, biking, and swimming became a defining feature of his character. A true enthusiast, Brent completed 41 marathons, over 100 half marathons, and the Ironman in Cozumel, Mexico in 2013, showcasing his healthy obsession with these activities. His infectious enthusiasm drew many close to him into the world of running, trail running, biking, or swimming.

Despite the challenges posed by Lewy Body Dementia, Brent's resilience remained undiminished. He continued pedaling his bike and ran nearly every day until the very end, a testament to his remarkable determination. His ability to push his mind and body beyond perceived limits was extraordinary, matched only by his love for life and fondness for cracking jokes whenever possible.

Brent is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Barney; daughters, Jenna (Jeremy) Anderson (Jeremy and Shana (Erik) Sherlund; grandchildren, Tristin Anderson, Bridger Anderson, Hunter Sherlund, Aleks Hinton, Tiger Hinton, and Ty McBroon; stepchildren, Alex Hinton (Kat) Kuba and Taylor Hinton (Bonnie McBroon); siblings, Sandra Barney (Frank Cooke), Cathy, and (Dick Marshall); as well as nephews, Leon Petterson, Alan Petterson, Jackie Petterson, and Derrick Marshall; and her niece, Trina Perez. He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeland and Dorothy Barney; brother, Kevin Barney; sister, Karen; and stepson, Cameron Hinton.
