Listen to Obituary

Blaine Dixon Nelson passed peacefully on January 28, 2026 in Ogden, Utah at the age of 92, with loving family by his side. Blaine led five generations here on earth until his passing. He was also the last living sibling of 8, whom he loved dearly.

Blaine was born at home, in Fish Haven, Idaho, to Susan Amanda Loveland and Lyman Richard Nelson. He was the sixth of eight children.

Blaine grew up in Fish Haven, Idaho, living right across from Bear Lake and attended kindergarten through fifth grade there. He also lived in Logan, Utah where he went to school for a few winters as it was hard to find work for the family in Fish Haven in the winter. They then went back to Bear Lake to live and work in the summer. When the family moved to Logan, if you can imagine, the family walked there from Fish Haven. He started High School in Paris, Idaho. At about the age of 14 the family moved to Brigham City, Utah. He graduated from Box Elder High School in the class of 1951.

Growing up he milked cows for his Uncle Les, ice-skated on Bear Lake, went on many sleigh rides, took care of beehives, made honey candy, pulled many shenanigans (that made great stories, especially when making day trips to Bear Lake and reminiscing of childhood with his kids), and he was known to have a weakness for muscle cars and driving fast.

Blaine was blessed with an abundance of musical abilities. He was a wonderful dancer, played the mouth organ, the steel guitar, and the piano, but most of all he had a beautiful tenor voice. His mother would play the piano and Blaine would sing his heart out in church and mutual. Just this last Sunday he serenaded his grand dog, Butterfinger, when they met for the first time.

Blaine married Evelyn Hirschi on November 7, 1952, in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and made their home in Brigham City, Utah. From this union they were blessed with six of their greatest blessings that brought them both much joy: Gordon Blaine Nelson, Debra Lee (Lynn) Richards, Brian David (JoAnne) Nelson, Kelly Ray (Lisa) Nelson, Craig Edward (Brittni) Nelson, Paula Jean Hansen. They were later divorced.

On January 14, 1991, Blaine married his sweetheart Patsy Murray Buck in Las Vegas, Nevada and then made their home in Ogden, Utah. Pat’s children, Carolyn Buck, Pamela Rawlins and Charles Owen Buck, added to Blaine’s blessings and he thought of them and loved them as his own too. Blaine and Pat loved to travel together. One of their favorite spots was Oregon, and they also spent many winters living in Hemet, California in their fifth wheel and later in their winter home in Mesquite, Nevada. Blaine and Pat celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this month. Pat said, “It was the best 35 years of my life”. We know dad felt the same.

Between both families Blaine is grandfather to 24 amazing grandkids he was proud of and loved very much: Jennifer, Mindy, Shalisa, Kira, Stacy, Ted, Trevor, Andy, Elizabeth, Haley, David, Brad, Michael, Mitchell, Joshua, Tyson, Jed, Deja, Cami, Lacey, Dustin, Lindsey, Chelsea, Heather. Great grandfather to 28 very special kidos and great-great grandfather to six little ones.

Blaine had many nieces and nephews and cousins who he loved as well. He especially loved family reunions at Bear Lake and other family gatherings and he appreciated all that went in to making those gatherings happen.

Blaine was a gentleman and had always been a protector. As a young boy he took on adult roles. He was close to and loved his mother very much and looked over his mother dearly, helping in every way possible.

Blaine has been a hard worker all his life and a great provider for his family. Blaine retired from Hill Air Force Base after 37 years. At the time of retirement, he was the Branch Chief of Packaging and Preservation.

Blaine was a “legendary” poker player, a game he enjoyed very much. He loved watching westerns and old, old movies. He enjoyed going to movies in general. He enjoyed putting puzzles together and did many. He also had great knowledge of airplanes, specifically for the military. He could just look at them, even if they were in the sky he could say what kind it was and what it was used for. He passed on that love and interest to his children. Blaine was a helper, he loved people, he loved talking to them, helping out any way he could right up to the week he passed. In the years leading up to the last few he enjoyed riding his bike and you guessed it, stopping to talk to people. He exercised and lifted weights right to the end, he tried to stay physically strong, independent, courageous and positive, trying to make the best of what was, and he kept being a helper and a friend.

Blaine was preceded in death by both his parents, his ex-wife, Evelyn Hirschi; his brothers, Elwin, Bob and Sheldon Nelson; his sisters Audrey N. Busby, Deloris N. Smith, Nelda Nelson and Nedra N. Nelson; son, Charles Owen Buck; his grandsons, Joshua Dennis Nelson and Deja Rawlins; his granddaughters, Cami and Lacey Rawlins and great grandson Anders Dietz.

Blaine’s family is so grateful and would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. John Hemmersmeier and Staff at the South Ogden Center for Family Medicine, Jamie Wilson, Blaine’s Hospice Nurse with Symbii Home Health and Hospice, and to the entire amazing staff at Hidden Valley Assisted Living and Memory Care who provided so much love, kindness and were so very helpful. Also, it has meant so much to have the friendships made, love, interest and compassion shown by the members of Harrison Branch of Weber County Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Blaine’s kids would like to especially thank Pat for being by their dad’s side every step of the way, and for her tender loving care, friendship and especially for loving him.

As you can see from reading above, Blaine left behind quite a legacy. In his own words, with much gratitude in his heart at a family gathering in his honor, he pointed to each individual as he looked out among his wife, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and great-great grandkids and said, “When you have this, you have everything!”.
