Billie Kathleen Hemmert Smith

December 21, 1936 — January 22, 2024

Billie Kathleen Hemmert Smith, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed January 22 at 1:40 p.m. peacefully at home surrounded by family. Billie was born in Paris, Idaho, on December 21, 1936, to Willard Wright and Katherine Verme Hemmert. Her family moved to Thayne, Wyoming soon after she was born and then moved to Ogden in 1941. Billie continued to live in Ogden until her passing.

 

She married Orlin H Smith on September 18,1953. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple on June 28, 1963. Billie loved bowling. She worked at Rainbow Lanes for 9 years and the Ben Lomond Lanes for 25 years. Eventually retiring from there to raise two great-grandchildren. Billie was president and secretary for 45 years on many bowling leagues. She was secretary of the 600-700 Club, director on the Ogden Bowlers Association, Secretary of the Ogden Bowling Proprietors Association, Editor of the Newsletter The Bowling Line, was a certified Y.A.B.A coach. She bowled in the National Bowling Tournament in many states. She was inducted in the Ogden Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame on February 25, 1995.

 

Billie was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Serving many positions; Relief Society Counselor, Relief Society Teacher, Relief Society historian, Primary teacher, Cub Scout Den mother, and visiting teacher.

 

Billie’s greatest joy in life was her family, her loving husband, children, and grandchildren. Her happiest times were spent with them. Because of their love of children Billie and Orlin were a foster/shelter home for many years. During those years they gave their love and protection to 161 children.

 

Billie is survived by her husband, Orlin H Smith of Ogden, UT; daughters, Katherine (Steven) Thompson of Plain City, UT; Nasia Smith of Ogden, UT; Bobbi (Steve) Mani of Twin Falls, ID; and Nancy Smith of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee; son Stan (Shauna) Smith of Plain City UT; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

 

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Smith; grandchild, Steven Short; and great-grandchild Darcie Hanchey; parents; two sisters, and a brother,

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., officiated by Bishop Don Chantry. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd

 

Our family would like to extend our thanks to Utah Home Health and Hospice, Audrey Turner RN and Amber Davis CNA. We thank them for their love and compassion for our mother and grandmother. We would also like to extend our thanks to Canyon Hollows Ward for their support in our time of need.
