Barton Rodney Nilson passed peacefully into eternity on July 11, 2023, secondary to complications from Chronic Myleomonocytic Leukemia. He was 81 years old. Bart was born in Smithfield, Utah on September 6, 1941, to Ezra Rodney Nilson and Ludella Ingra Jenson. Bart had one younger brother, Ezra. Bart was taught the value of hard work from both of his parents. From his father he gained a love of gardening and the outdoors. His mother instilled in him a love of learning and from her example he learned to be both driven and compassionate.
After graduating from Ogden High School, Bart attended Weber State College. Later, he studied bioengineering and biophysics at the University of Utah and received a degree with honors in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Thiokol as a rocket scientist in the rocket motor case division for three years.
Bart married his sweetheart, Kathie Krumbach, on August 24, 1967. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple with their children on May 10, 1991. Their early married years were spent in Salt Lake City where Bart attended medical school at the University of Utah. Bart loved working as an emergency room physician for 45 years, retiring a few months before his 80th birthday. He was respected and loved by his colleagues, and he loved them. Bart had a brilliant mind and could solve any problem and fix anything.
Bart and Kathie were blessed with four wonderful children who were their greatest joy. The family made memories boating, skiing, and backpacking in the Uinta Mountains.
Bart was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served and blessed family, friends, and neighbors throughout his life with wisdom, expert medical care, delicious produce from his garden, and a kind listening ear. Bart enjoyed gardening and farming. He thought it was important to teach his children and grandchildren the value of manual labor and spent time working alongside many of them on his farm. His happy place was the solitude and tranquility of being among the trees listening to birds in the gardens around his home. He took great pleasure in gazing out the kitchen window at his beautiful alfalfa field with the sprinklers on.
Bart was a tough yet tender-hearted, gentle man with a wonderful smile. He was wise, reliable, hardworking, observant, generous, selfless, resilient, strong, loving, and full of integrity. He is beloved by his family and all who were privileged to know him. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and worked hard to help make all our dreams come true.
Bart is survived by his wife, Kathie; four children, Scott (Becky) Nilson, Christian (Julie) Nilson, Jodie (Rick) Stratford, and Jennie (Stuart) Gibby; 20 grandchildren, Jacob (Kilen), Joshua (Jaylene), Tessa (Joshua), Sadie (Joseph), Jens, Anne (Austin), Naomi, Katie, Charlie Bart, Sam, Ella, Abby, Kallie, Jack, Luke, Mollie, Mary Katherine, Blake, Ellie and Noah; and three great-grandchildren, Khloe, Livie and Caleb. He is also survived by his brother, Ezra (Leicha) Nilson. Bart was preceded in death by his parents, Rodney and Ludella Nilson.
