Barbara Gries Houghton

July 9, 1938 - July 27, 2023

Barbara passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 85 after bravely battling Alzheimer's for an extended period of time.

Barbara was born on July 9, 1938, in Grand Junction, Colorado, to loving parents Edward and Venice Gries. From a young age, Barbara displayed exceptional talent and passion for the piano. She won numerous competitions and quickly found herself playing for local bands. Her beautiful compositions and arrangements brought joy to everyone who had the privilege of hearing her play.

After attending BYU on scholarship for two years, Barbara married her beloved Phil Houghton on February 19, 1960, just 12 days after his return from a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii.

Barbara's creative spirit extended beyond music as she became a skilled seamstress, delighting her family and friends with her beautiful and imaginative creations. She also had a flair for cooking, regularly preparing delicious meals for any occasion.

In retirement, Barbara and Phil built a stunning, energy-efficient home on the side of a cliff near Monticello, Utah, known as the "Houghton Cliff House." This unique dwelling became the launchpad for countless unforgettable adventures, enjoyed by both family and friends.

Service was an integral part of Barbara's life, and she dedicated herself continually to her family, friends, and neighbors. She faithfully served her Church family in various callings, including a senior mission on the Navajo Reservation alongside her husband Phil. Barbara cherished spending time with her grandchildren and sharing her many talents with them. Her impact on their lives, and the lives of all who knew her, cannot be overstated.

Barbara is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, Phil Houghton, as well as her father, Edward Gries, her mother, Venice Gries, and her brother, Edward Gries. She is survived by her three children: daughter Sherril Lemmon (Les), son Steve (Jennifer), and son Paul. She also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom adored her deeply.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 11, 2023, at the Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, located at 727 N. 400 E. (Orchard Drive).
