Athena Souravlis Halkidis, 72, passed on August 31, 2024; she is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Athena was born on June 3, 1952, to Kostadinos (Gust) and Argere Souravlis in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Athena was an Ogden High and Weber State College (University) Alumni getting her diploma and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Secondary Education. Following her graduation, she started working with Weber County Schools teaching business and math at Weber High School and then Bonneville High School.
On December 26, 1982 she married Vasilios (Vasili) Halkidis in Ogden, Utah at the Greek Orthodox Church. They made their home in the Ogden area and in 1984 their daughter, Lena was born. Lena was Athena’s one and only daughter. Later in life Athena and Vasili moved and made a home in Athens, Greece, where they lived until Vasili’s passing, then she came back to Utah living in the Clearfield and Roy area.
Athena, after leaving Bonneville High School, she taught business and math classes at Stevens Henegar College before retirement. During her entire career she was a dedicated teacher, cheer adviser, assistant director, and student advocate for many years. She loved teaching as much as students loved her.
Athena’s pride and joy were her grandchildren, Abbey and Watson. She helped raise them, would get them ready for school every single day, and welcomed them home with snacks and hugs. She supported them at music concerts, sporting events, and was there to care for them when they were home sick from school. She was always a kind, selfless, and nurturing person. Her love of reading, cooking, and being surrounded by family will forever be remembered.
She was a faithful member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. She had served as Sunday school teacher in her youth. She was supportive of her Greek Orthodox church and community throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter Lena (Mark) Wood; grandchildren Abbey and Watson Wood; sister Litsa (Chris) Bournakis; and several beloved nieces and nephews who she continually supported and loved like her own children. She was preceded in death by her husband Vasilios, and parents Gust and Argere Souravlis.
