Anna Marie Porter Barnes Smith passed away September 20, 2024, due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was born to Horace Welcome and Elsie Agnes Buck Porter on her mother’s birthday, January 9, 1941.
Anna Marie grew up in Porterville, Utah, and was very proud that she was raised in the home built by her grandfather. This fact most likely contributed to her lifelong passion for genealogy and family history. Anna Marie had a very keen testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ, and this testimony compelled her in her zealous activity of this important work. Not only did she search out her own family genealogy, but she also assisted many other friends and family in their quest to find family.
Max J. Barnes and Anna Marie were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1961. Children Nancy and Mark soon joined the family, and they settled into their home in South Ogden. It was there in the old South Ogden 14th Ward that she was called, as a young mother to be relief society president. In this calling she served the many widows of the ward lovingly and diligently.
Max passed away in 1974, leaving Anna Marie to raise her family as a single mother. Several years later she met Linwood Smith, and they were married in March 1979. With this marriage the family grew with the inclusion of Linwood’s four children. Linwood brought a new dimension to Marie’s life combining and enlarging both immediate and extended families. Shortly after their marriage, Marie and Linwood moved to Porterville to care for Marie’s mother in the childhood home of Marie. Eventually, they moved into South Weber where they became beloved to all the ward members, neighbors, and especially the neighborhood children. Linwood passed away in 2009 leaving Marie a widow once again.
Marie was employed with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for many year in the Genealogical Department from which she retired. Again, this employment provided her with many friends she dearly loved.
Marie will be fondly remembered as a loving friend, neighbor, aunt, mother, and especially as grandmother and great-great-grandmother. The little nuggets of wisdom she shared will surely be missed.
Anna Marie is survived by her children, Nancy (Norris) Porter, Hoschton, GA; Mark (Wendy) Barnes, Simpsonville, SC; her bonus children, Diane Hudkins, Scott (Karen) Smith, and Craig Smith; also, her brothers, David and Orson. She is also survived by a large posterity of 15 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren (with a couple on the way) and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; son, David Smith; her parents; brother, Graham Porter, and sister, Leatha Foster.
A very special thank you to Mark and Wendy Barnes who welcomed Marie into their home to care for her in her declining years.
