Listen to Obituary

Alice Jane (Gowans) Evans passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, one day before her 93rd birthday. She was born October 29, 1932, in Wesleyville, Pennsylvania, the second of three children born to Floyd and Rachel Gowans, and sister to Floyd and Fred Gowans. Alice grew up in Erie, PA, and graduated from Academy High School in 1950. She moved to Utah to attend Brigham Young University and later transferred to the University of Utah, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1955.

Alice met her future husband, Jack Evans, on a blind date to Lagoon. They were married June 7, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple. Jack preceded her in death in 2012. Together they raised seven children and built a loving posterity of 28 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, with one more soon to arrive.

Alice lived a full and joyful life. She was a devoted and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including Relief Society President, Young Women President, and Primary President. Alice was also an accomplished piano player. She took organ lessons and served for many years as a ward organist, blessing her congregation with her music and offering her talents wherever she was needed. Her love for the Savior was evident in all she did, and she truly exemplified enduring to the end.

Alice and Jack cherished time with their family and loved adventuring together. They created countless memories on camping trips, on their houseboat at Lake Powell, and during long road trips to Phoenix, Mexico, Disneyland, and Calgary along with many others. They were dedicated Weber State Wildcat fans and, along with dear friends Barbara and Mike Avondet, traveled with the team for many years. They proudly held season tickets for over 50 years. Alice also loved cheering on her grandchildren in their various sports and activities and traveled near and far to support them.

Alice had a deep love of flowers. She always kept her yard and home filled with blooms and, later in life, could often be found clipping flowers—both invited and sometimes uninvited—from around her neighborhood. After raising her family, Alice worked in the nursery at McKay-Dee Hospital, where she delighted in welcoming newborns—including many of her own grandchildren. Later, she served as a clinical instructor at Davis Applied Technology College, where she loved teaching and mentoring nursing students. She retired in 2005.

Alice enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, sewing, and quilting. One of her greatest joys was making quilts for each of her grandchildren to receive at their high school graduation.

Alice was blessed with many cherished and lifelong friends whose love, laughter, and shared memories enriched her life. The family would also like to express heartfelt gratitude to Rocky Mountain Hospice, including her nurse Jenn and her CNA Abbie, for the tender care and compassion they provided to their mother in her final months.

Alice is survived by her seven children, Carrie and Scott Nelson, Julie and Kurt Boyer, Patti Pilgrim, Amy and Brian Smith, D’Ann Fletcher, John and Holly Evans, and Laurel and Brad Robb; as well as 27 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Evans; her grandson, Kade Boyer; her parents, Floyd and Rachel Gowans; and her brothers, Floyd Gowans and Fred Gowans.
