Alan Eugene Stockland, 86, a long-time Ogden resident and former professor of Microbiology at Weber State University, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2024, following a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. His wife, Moi appreciated the care he received at Hidden Valley Assisted Living Facility in South Ogden and was by his side in his final moments.
Born July 18, 1938, in Huron, South Dakota, Alan was the eldest of two children born to Clarence Ozzy and Betty Lucille (Dawes) Stockland.
As his father served in the military, the family moved around quite a bit, but Alan’s earlier years were primarily spent in Lincoln, Nebraska where he graduated from high school and did his undergraduate work at University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
Alan enlisted in the Peace Corp, teaching high school biology from 1962-1963. Following this service, he rode his Triumph motorcycle from Malaysia to India and eventually all the way to Europe. The bike was “a real lemon” but Alan eventually conquered!
While teaching, he met Pak Moi Lim, one of his students. He later proposed. He then went on to earn his Master and PhD degrees from Michigan State University in East Lansing. During part of this time, Moi went to England and earned her nursing degree. She accepted his proposal, and they were married on September 14, 1968, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The couple loved to travel, and they raised two children together, a son, Brian, and a daughter, Tanya. They lived in Ogden, Utah where Alan began teaching at Weber State College, and later they lived in Indonesia while he was on sabbatical in 1978. They visited Malaysia together and did a lot of other running around, but good old Ogden was home base.
In 1999, Brian passed away and shortly after that, Alan retired from Weber State University where he had been a professor for over thirty years.
Alan loved cycling, racing his Masi, and enjoyed competing nationwide. He passed everyone going uphill, which he loved, but would coast downhill, where everyone else would catch up or pass him. He competed in the St. George Senior Games many times as a cyclist and did very well. He took 2nd in the Nationals for Senior Games at the age of 75.
Alan loved antique cars. He belonged to the Lincoln Highway Association, of which he was a past president, and the Hudson Antique Car Club. The one at Union Station was lovingly donated by him. He was a member of the Sierra Club and a founding member of the salon group–those who know, know!
Alan also loved hiking and running and spending time with his family, particularly his two grandchildren, Adelle and Myra.
A huge fan of Bennie Goodman and flamenco, Alan loved classical music. He will be remembered most for his frugality, his loving and generous disposition, for being a professional germaphobe, and being livid over shrimp or mushrooms. More than all these things, he was an intelligent, gentle, family man who cared about the environment, enjoyed his wine, and was tacky and grumpy appropriately.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Pak Moi Stockland, Ogden; daughter, Tanya (Mark Braithwaite) Stockland, and their two daughters, all of Seattle, WA; brothers-in-law, Pak Seng Lim, Kuantan, Malaysia; Pak Leong Lim, Hong Kong; Pak Koo Lim, Melbourne, Australia, Ahchoo (Gretchen) Lim, Altadena, CA; and sister-in-law, Pak Yen (Peter Girard) Lim, Cambridge, MA; and by his nephew, Arthur Girard.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian and by his younger sister, Shari Sapp.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hidden Valley Assisted Living Facility for their kind and professional care of Alan and the nurses from Inspiration Hospice.
