Alan Montgomery Johnston

May 11, 1933 — July 3, 2025

Alan Montgomery Johnston, age 92, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away July 3, 2025. He fought a valiant battle with multiple myeloma for the past 6 years.

Alan was born on May 11, 1933, in Clinton, Utah. He was the second of three sons of Maurice (Chick) and Verda Johnston. He attended school in West Point, graduated from Davis High School and attended Weber State College.

Alan married Carol Burningham on July 31, 1953, in the Logan Temple. They were both lifelong residents of West Point, Utah. Alan and Carol were blessed with three daughters and 10 years later a son, lovingly referred to as the caboose and/or white tornado!

As a young man, Alan worked his family farm and became known for his amazing work ethic. Neighbors entrusted him to operate their brand-new machinery. Alan and his mom delivered the Ogden Standard Examiner for many years, and he knew almost everyone in West Point, Syracuse, Clinton and Hooper.

Working at Hill Air Force Base for 37 years, Alan worked in the motor pool and was a crane operator, developing many close friendships along the way. He also drove truck for Lou Wakefield and Parnell Green, making cattle runs a few nights a week after working a full day at HAFB. Working double shifts for several years made it possible for him and Carol to build the family home they have lived in since 1962.

Alan had an affinity for fast cars, especially shiny black ones. He was industrious and could fix anything!

Happiest outside in nature, Alan and Carol enjoyed skiing, camping, boating, riding motor cycles and working in their yard. Many winters were spent in Yuma, AZ with family and friends. Well into their eighties, Alan and Carol would take a 13+ mile bike ride on the Legacy Trail every morning.

One of Alan and Carol’s most gratifying accomplishments was working on the committee for the Military Memorial in West Point. Alan always expressed gratitude for our Veterans and was very patriotic. A flag has always flown at their home!

Alan made friends easily, both young and old, that really looked up to him. He was a man of honor in all things. He had a great sense of humor and made people laugh with his good-natured pranks and funny sayings.

He loved his family more than anything! They were his world, especially Carol. She was his “queen” and demanded she was treated as such. We never doubted his love for our mom!

Alan was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is survived by wife of 72 years, Carol, children, Jill (Marv-deceased), Lauri, Tami (Joey), Brad (Carrie), and in Oops’s words: a ton of grandkids and great-grandkids who are all “wonderful”. He is also survived by his brother, Noal (Joan).

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don, son-in-law, Marv Steadman, grandsons, Taylor Johnston and Blake Hatch, great-granddaughter, Jane Archer and beloved aunt and uncle, Grant and Florence Blake.
