LAYTON – Ruby Jewell Timms Price, 102, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.  She had resided in Layton, Davis County, Utah for 73 years.

She was born on December 13, 1915 in Kilgore, Texas the daughter of Levy and Polly Douglas Timms.

Ruby graduated from Philander Smith College, Weber State University and BYU with a full undergraduate to Master’s Degree.

Ruby married Ralph Price Sr. on November 29, 1948 in Evanston, Wyoming.  He preceded her in death on August 3, 2001.

During childhood she was a member of the Church of God, later in her life she became a member of the LDS Church and was active in the Layton 4th Ward.  She taught Sunday School, Primary and served as Ward Historian.

Grandma Ruby J. Price was a teacher for over 44 years known for her legendary helping hand to all:1st Black Teacher Hired in State of Utah; 1st Black Utah Mother of the Year 1977; National Volunteer of the Year 1991 JACS; Outstanding Citizen Award 1978; 1st NAACP President in Utah 1944; Utah State Outstanding Teacher of Year 1967; Four Term Republican Chairperson Davis County, Davis County CAP Board Chairperson 1980; North Davis Medical Center Board 1976-78; Member Sigma Gamma Rho; Utah and National Mothers Association; Founder Handicapped Unlimited; 60 years Girl Scout Leader, National Guard Bronze Minuteman Award Community Service 2011; Huntsman Award of Excellence in Education 1992; Outstanding Achievement Award Utah Mothers Association 2018; Verdland Park Recognition Project 2015 and far too many more to list here.

She was a lecturer, author, founder of many organizations and human service projects.  Ruby loved life, working with young people and giving back to the community. She had love and respect for all people and a strong faith in God.  Grandma Ruby Jewell Timms Price will be remembered for her charitable Christ-like life.

Surviving are her son, Ralph Price Jr., Bountiful; daughters, Marqueax D. Price-Black, Irving, TX; Deon R. Price, Layton; DeAne “Dee” R. Price, Layton; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Price Sr., daughters, Jessie R. Tave, DeVon R. Price, parents, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 26, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.


A Reception for family and friends will be held at Layton Creekside Stake, 1480 Phillips Street Kaysville, Utah.
