Raymond Ferrin

January 7, 1937 — June 30, 2019

Raymond Clarence Ferrin passed away on June 30, 2019 in his home in Clearfield. He was born January 7, 1937 at the Dee Hospital in Ogden the son of Clarence Samuel Ferrin and Lillie White Mayhew of Pleasant View, Utah. He was the oldest of four children: Carolyn (Joe) Fletcher currently of Eagle Mountain, UT, Rosalie (Richard) Jolley of Pleasant View, UT; and Colleen (Doug) Wilson of Eden, UT.

Ray married Geraldine Jorgenson on March 1, 1957 in the Logan Temple. They were blessed with three children: Cindy L. Davidson currently of Roy, Milo (Connie) R. Ferrin of Jacksonville, North Carolina; and Byron (Laine) L. Ferrin of Burley, Idaho. This marriage later ended in divorce.

Ray then married Margaret Bybee but later this marriage also ended in divorce.

Ray now boasts of having eight grandchildren Michael Davidson, Bradlee (Krista) Davidson, Jessica (Alex) Fleck, Amber (Jason) Anderson, Amelia Ferrin, Kole Ferrin, Elder Bradley Eggleston, and Austin Ferrin; four great-grandchildren Sebastian Fleck, Benjamin Fleck, Kirsten Anderson, Connor Anderson.

On April 4, 1986 Ray then married Suzanne Ashby Pont in Clearfield and their marriage was later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. He became the stepfather to Harold (Susan) A. Pont of Clearfield; Kenneth (Carissa) C. Pont of Tennessee and Paul (Tamara) P. Pont of Layton. At the time of his death Ray also had eleven step-grandchildren Kait, Charlie, Cooper, Abigail Pont, Edward Pont, Isabel Pont, Ophelia Pont, Anthony Pont, Robert Pont, Ashlyn Pont,  and two step-great-grandchildren Silus and Vinny.

In his senior year of high school he joined the United States Air Force and served thru 1963. He passed Basic Training at Parks AFB, CA. Ray was stationed at Chanute AFB, IL; Ossian AFB, Korea; Clovis AFB, NM as a Jet Engine Mechanic, Track-vehicle Mechanic during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He then served the 145th Field Artillery in the Utah National Guard 1954 thru 1976. He also held a restricted radio-telephone operator permit and worked as a radio operator vehicle dispatcher. Some of his TDY locations were Toul-Rosier AFB, France; Sembach AFB; Homestead AFB, FL during the Cuban Missile Crisis; Hawaii; Wake Island; Japan; Okinawa; Guam; Taiwan; Hong Cong: Philippians; Thailand; Australia; England; Germany; Denmark; Tripoli; Lebanon; Libya; Spain; Italy. He also visited while in the area Bermuda, the Azores Islands, and the Rock of Gibraltar. Ray was very proud of the high school diploma he earned in the military Besides serving his country he was active for twenty years in the Civil Air Patrol for 20 years, 1951 -1971.

Raymond and Suzanne enjoyed many years volunteering at the American Heritage Center, Jensen Farm, in Wellsville, Utah.  They also enjoyed many years volunteering at the Garr Ranch, Antelope State Park, where they greeted visitors, displayed many single-stroke gas engines that Ray collected and restored, and answered visitors’ questions.  He and his wife joined the Great Basin Antique Machinery Association for many years where they made many good friends as the club supported city parades and celebrations in Weber, Davis, Box Elder, and Salt Lake Counties.

Ray’s main occupation was working twenty-two years at Hill Air Force Base, retiring in 1993, but in his youth he worked in Ogden delivering telegrams and later with his father at Ogden Iron Works.  He also worked at Defense Depot Ogden as a packer and later at Wonder Modular Homes as a truck driver.  He was successful when he was self-employed roofing homes in Weber and Davis Counties.  At one time he held a pilot’s license and flew small planes. In his retirement he also enjoyed visiting with other pilots and retired military at the Ogden Airport and Beez Café in Roy, Utah.

He was a long time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as secretary in the Clearfield 3rd Ward High Priest Group and later served a mission to the LDS Cannery in Ogden. When he died he was a member of the Wedgewood Ward in Clearfield Utah North Stake.

Our gratitude is extended to the Symbii Home Health Care and Hospice personnel who made our lives enjoyable with their many visits and positive attitude. We also extend our gratitude to our neighbors and ward members who consistently offered us help and their assistance when needed. A special thanks to Paul Hadley who always showed up at a moment’s notice day or night. Thanks for sharing the trout you caught too.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Clearfield City Cemetery, 1050 South State Street, Clearfield where military honors will be accorded.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
