Charles Berwald

Charles Berwald, MD died at his home in Layton, Utah on April 28, 2015. Charles was born on August 3, 1937 to Percy and Louise Berwald in Bessemer, Michigan. He graduated cum laude, AOA from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1963. He married Karol Kimmerly on June 15, 1963.

After a year of internship at St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota, he was commissioned a Captain in the Air Force and assigned to Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa until March 1967. He returned to Rochester, Minnesota and practiced medicine until moving to Layton, Utah in 1973 where he continued in Family Practice until his retirement in June, 2012. He was much loved by his patients because he cared so much.

We, his family, greatly love and admire his strength, his giving and love for all of us. We especially admire his ability to accomplish all this while battling severe life-long depression.

He is survived by his wife, Karol, three children, Charles “Skosh” Berwald (Cynthia), Michael Berwald and Kirstin Johnson (Ryan) and three beloved grandchildren, Lucas Johnson, CoCo Berwald and Charlie Berwald. They will miss their Opa. He is also survived by three siblings, Joyce Forte Graitge (Paul), Bill Berwald (Shelley) and MaryJane Eggleston (Jon). He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Bolling.

We miss you and love you.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.
