Patsy Ann Belnap Smith
February 8, 1948 - June 6, 2018
Our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. She was born the second of seven children to LaGrande and Beverly (Bennett) Belnap on February 8, 1948 in Ogden, Utah.
Pat was raised in Hooper, Utah in a loving home where she worked hard and made the most of every day. She loved sports, especially volleyball and softball. She was part of the first graduating class at Roy High School in 1966. She continued her education at Weber State College and earned a BS in Elementary Education. At Weber State, Pat participated in the Otyokwa sorority and held many leadership positions. She was the first recipient of the Silver Chalice award for leadership in 1969.
She married her best friend and sweetheart, Gerald R. (Jerry) Smith, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 6, 1968. They have shared almost 50 years together and have raised five sons and are grandparents to 13 grandchildren. They raised their family in Roy and later moved to Uintah. Pat was a devoted mother who sacrificed for her children. She worked tirelessly to support them in all of their activities. She was not only an amazing mother to her sons and their wives, but welcomed all who entered her home and treated each one as her own. Many call her “Mom.”
She began her life of teaching at Pioneer Elementary School. While raising her family, she found opportunities to serve and educate others in her career at Weber Human Services, specializing in the prevention of child abuse, substance abuse, and fetal alcohol syndrome. Her influence has been felt by thousands of children through the Gus and Gussie program that she took to schools throughout the area. She was affectionately known as “Miss Pat” by her students.
Pat’s membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an important part of her life. She loved the Lord and others felt her testimony through her service in Relief Society, Young Women, Sunday School, and temple worship.
Pat lived a life of service, always looking out for others and caring deeply for those she served. She gave her all in everything she did. She had a gift for making others feel welcome and important. She loved working in her flower gardens and beautifying the world around her. She loved her family and constantly served them and looked out for them, even when her health made it difficult. She never wavered in her love and devotion to them. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of love and the world is a better place because of her. “Goodbyes are not forever and not the end, it simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.”
Pat is survived by her parents, husband, and five children: Jason (Melanie) Smith, Jeremy (Trisha) Smith, Josh (Shannon) Smith, Justin (Jamie) Smith, Jamin (Ashley) Smith, and her 13 grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Dennis (LeAnn) Belnap, Shauna (Kevin) Hansen, Kathleen (Robert) Smith, Gregg (Robin) Belnap and Jill Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Kevin Belnap.
